Banff RFC 117-7 Fraserburgh RFC

Banff Rugby Club continued their winning start to the season with a total demolition of a shell-shocked Fraserburgh side on Saturday. The game which replaced the Referees Cup match saw Banff face a Broch side that arrived without players due several call-offs due to injury, work and the cardiac arrest of a player on the training pitch the week previous. Thoughts go out Chris Arnott and his recovery from all at Banff.

Banff made a few changes, with John Swaffield returning, and a debut for Scott Findlater. Connor Riddell also moved to stand off. The game was also played 13 a side to accommodate Fraserburgh. True to recent form, Banff flew out the blocks. A set move try for Angus Swan was shortly followed by a debut score for the youngster Findlater who outpaced his man to slide in. Stuart Barron nailed the kick, his first of seven.

Banff continued to overpower and outpace the opposition, and good hands meant that Grant Davidson, Andy McDonald and Riddell all scored in quick succession, ensuring the game was all but over within twenty minutes. At times, Fraserburgh seemed to be the architects of their own downfall, and Ben Collins kicked through a dropped ball to score a try that rubbed salt in the wounds. Three more tries from Barron, Davidson and Findlater meant that Banff led 55-0 at the break, and could aim for a three figure score. The frightening thing is that Banff missed a couple of chances and could have been up by more.

Changes in the lineup allowed Gordon Robertson and Pete Legge on to shake things up, and unfortunately a loose pass from Legge let Fraserburgh score a try. Legge, determined to make up for his mistake burst into life, creating several chances, and scoring two for himself.

To Fraserburgh’s credit, they stuck in, however they were matched by good performances from Ross, McDonald, Swaffield and Ferrier who supported play well and could have all scored. Banff continued to play hard and ran in several tries in quick succession. Gordon Robertson and Fraser Geddes both scored after good team play, and their tries were followed by tries from Collins, Hester, Riddell and from Davidson and Findlater who completed their hat-tricks.

A match as one sided as this will not have been a true test for Banff, and will have to up their game further in next weeks Home league opener against Mackie.
