Match Report by Isla Jack

Strong win brings hopes of promotion again for Banff RFC men as they secure a 39 - 12 victory over Highland 2nd XV.

Banff started the game firmly and, after putting some great phases together, earned a penalty which Gordon Robertson easily slotted through. The tropical weather proved a lucky charm, as only a short time later winger Stuart Barron set up a try for scrumhalf Rory Allardice with an impressive draw and pass on the outside. The conversion sailed through. The next try came from Banff again, after Robertson spotted some space on the outside for flanker Nico Clark to storm his way through, again converted. The two were clearly ready for more, as the next try came from a great inside ball for Clark to sprint his way to the finish again. No conversion. Highland were keen to end the half with some points on the board and got a converted try at the very end, leaving the half time score at 22 - 7 to Banff.

The second half started off with the same intensity as the first, both teams putting in some crunching hits. The Banff backs saw some space close to the line and used their quick hands and to let opposite wing John Hester sail over the line in the corner. No conversion. The forwards then used quick ball from the line out, and second row John Swaffield powered his way through and over. Again no conversion. Highland were the next to put points on the board, after they capitalised on scrappy play from the backs right in front of the posts. No conversion. On one of the last plays of the game, flanker Fraser Geddes picked up a loose ball and dived over to earn the last points of the game. Robertson with the conversion. Highland got possession next and moved towards the posts, however Banff proved their defence could last until the end and saw the ball off the field. The final whistle blew, and all at Banff could relax at last.

This win puts the men back at the top of the table, with the upcoming challenge of Moray at home on Saturday 8th April.
